Why You Need a Success Sister

Together Everyone Achieves More is a common phrase you have heard many times. It is a true statement for life. Successful people rarely make it on their own. Being around others that are moving in the same direction as you, helps you move faster and better.  Have you ever started something but failed to follow through on it? Did you make a new goal, put it on the back burner, or tell yourself that you would never accomplish it? We have all set goals or deadlines for ourselves and missed the mark on them a time or two? One way to create consistency is to have a success sister or an accountability partner.

Women are communal creatures. We like to talk to our friends, let them know how we are doing, and what is going on in our lives. If we are trying to be healthier, we want to know that someone understands our battle with eating and exercise. If we are starting a business, we want support and opinions from those we care about the most.  Challenges often seem lighter when you know there is someone in your corner. So why not find a success sister?

A success sister is someone who is there to keep you accountable for a goal. She may have the same goal in common with you; and you all may be working on it together. She may be more of a big sister, someone who has been where you are. Or she may be someone working a completely different goal than you, but is someone who you share common beliefs with and is working on herself as well.

Finding a success sister can be a game changer in achieving your goals. Here are the Top 3 Reasons Why You Need a Success Sister:

  1. You need someone to check-in with on your goals. It is important to have someone other than yourself or your significant other to keep you accountable. Having a check-in partner is motivation to do the work you said you would do.Then you can adjust your schedule if you are not meeting the deadlines you set for yourself.
  2. You need a cheerleader for your goals. There are times when you feel down and ready to give up on your dreams. However, a success sister is there to cheer you on, encourage you not to give up, and to prioritize yourself.
  3. You need someone to challenge you. Everyone needs a good push in the right direction. Someone to tell you to let go of fear and step out on faith. A success siser will challenge you to be your best and call you out when you are slacking.

It is important to note, that everyone is not cut out to be your success sister. Just because you have known someone your whole life doesn’t mean they should be your success sister. This person should motivate and inspire you. She is supportive and works on her goals and dreams. too. You cannot expect changes in your life if you surround yourself with negative people or those who have no desire to realize their potential.

I have struggled with my consistency to reach my goals in the past, I would make timelines, miss them, set a new date, and just keep doing it over and over again. Other times, I would just put the goal on the back burner. I had no one to keep me accountable. Bola Onade Sokunbi says, “Most goals people set are not achieved because they are not held accountable for them. When goals are made in private they tend to fall off because people stop being motivated, stop focusing and stop prioritizing.”  My spouse would encourage me and do all the things you want a husband to do, but I needed a success sister.  Someone who walked in similar shoes as me.  Last year, I found my success sister and it has made such a difference in my life. We encourage, challenge, and cheer each other on as we are both working toward our goals. We offer advice when we see fit and are very supportive of the other’s goals.

If you have struggled to be consistent and stay accountable for your goals, you need a success sister.  She can serve as a check-in to keep you on track, a cheerleader when it’s going well or not so well, and a challenger when you need a push to get going. It’s time to surround yourself with someone who has dreams, desire, and ambition. She will help you move forward and realize your potential.  It is time to find your success sister!
