Find Your Motto

Do you find it hard to start your day? Do you sometimes need a little extra inspiration to get going? Do you struggle to stay motivated to live your best life? Do you often make plans to exercise or eat better but can’t seem to stay on track? What you need is a motto for your life. A personal motto is a short phrase, slogan, or quote that motivates you to be your best self. It represents who you are or who you aspire to be.

A personal motto has many benefits to your life. It can help you think positive and banish the negative words we often tell ourselves. It is also a great way to inspire yourself to stay focused on your goals. A personal motto can also be used as a calming mechanism when fear or anxiety shows itself in your life. It reminds you of who you are and where you want to go.

Even big companies have a motto or slogan. The motto or slogan for Publix supermarkets is ‘Where Shopping is a Pleasure”. Target’s slogan is “Expect More. Pay Less”. Best Buy’s slogan is “Expert service. Unbeatable price.” The slogan for Coca Cola is “Open Happiness”.  All these mottos tell you the goal of that company and what they want to represent. So why shouldn’t you have one to represent your life?

My personal motto is a quote by P.T. Barnum “No One Ever Made a Difference by Being Like Everyone Else.” This quote is on the home page of the blog and written down in other places around my house because it motivates me not to be average or mediocre. It inspires me to stay focused on the goals I have for my life. It reminds me not settle for less than the best. It also tell me that it is okay to be different and go to the beat of my own drum.

What would you say to represent yourself? What vibe do you want to give off or exude during your day? What are you about? Now, I want you to take some time to think about these questions. Write down some words of phrases that come to mind that you want to represent your life. Then look up some quotes that go along with the top three words or phrases – for example success quotes or determination quotes or never giving up quotes or mom quotes. You can even create your own from your own mind or a mix of things you commonly hear people say about you.

Then start each day with your motto. Post it in your bathroom. Write it on a sticky note in your office. Say it to yourself in the morning. Make it a part of your daily routine. Let it remind you of who you are, what you aspire to do or be, and what you stand for in life. Use it to stay on track with your goals and become engaged in the pursuit of living your best life.

Here are some of my favorite quotes to inspire you as you create your personal motto:

  • “Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’!” Audrey Hepburn
  • “Life is 10% what happens to you and 90% how you react to it.” Charles R. Swindoll
  • “It always seems impossible until its done.” Nelson Mandela
  • We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.”. Maya Angelou
  • “Encourage yourself, believe in yourself, and love yourself. Never doubt who you are.” Stephanie Lahart
  • “Start where you are, with what you have.  Make something of it and never be satisfied.” George Washington Carver
  • “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” Michael Jordan
  • “Never be limited by other people’s limited imaginations.” Dr. Mae Jamison
  • “Success isn’t about how much money you make, it’s about the difference you make in people’s lives.” Michelle Obama

I challenge you this week to find your personal motto. Start with a list of words or phrases, look up motivational quotes, and make a motto that represents you and who you want to be in life. A personal motto is a great way to motivate, inspire, and get you moving on the journey to be the best you.
